Any animal lover will be disgusted, angry, and saddened by the figures. According to the Humane Society of the United States, up to 500,000 pups are sold in pet stores each year, with many of these stores purchasing their animals from the worst breeders.

How To Avoid The Pitfalls When Purchasing A New Puppy

Many books and articles have been written about the art of selecting a puppy e.g., doing puppy exams, seeking parental OFA certifications, etc, but few, if any, have addressed the contractual side of the process. I can tell you from personal experience that buying a great show puppy from a well-known breeder can be a stressful procedure because no breeder would give up the choice of the litter to a competitor or a novice without co-ownership of the puppy.

The breeder gains various rights as a co-owner of a puppy, to the buyer's detriment. To begin with, the breeder may also be an experienced handler, and the purchaser may be required to utilize the breeder as the puppies' trainer and handler under contract. Agreeing to this could be a huge mistake because the buyer may be compelled to pay for the breeder's time to train and handle the puppy, even if they are co-owners. Accepting this could set you back THOUSANDS of dollars.

The breeder may stipulate in the contract that your bitch/dog must whelp/stud puppies. Of course, they would be contractually entitled to the first pick of the litter, and they would be free to choose either male or female puppies. Furthermore, you, as the buyer, may be obliged to cover the costs of breeding and whelping the puppies, like food, vet bills, lodging, AKC registrations, stud fees, and the breeder's time, even if you are not allowed to choose the puppies. Furthermore, you may not be able to view or interact with your dog during pregnancy and delivery. When animals are sent away for whelping or stud service, some breeders have been known to exchange them.

As a result, I strongly advise you to microchip your puppy and obtain an AKC DNA ID as soon as possible after purchase. This way, you'll be able to reclaim your favorite pet without worrying about its identity.

Most respectable breeders will promise that your puppy will be free of numerous diseases for the first two years after purchase. What they may forget to disclose is that if your puppy becomes incurably ill, the replacement puppy may be one of their choosing rather than yours; this means you could wind up with a new puppy with a bad temperament.

So keep that in mind. If you don't read your contract thoroughly, you can become a victim of your ignorance.
